Unclaimed Property – Unclaimed property (sometimes referred to as abandoned property) refers to property that has had no activity generated or contact with the owner for one year or longer. Common forms of unclaimed property include uncashed checks, unredeemed gift certificates, customer overpayments, etc.

Acting in the best interest of consumers, each state has enacted an unclaimed property statute that protects the consumer’s property from reverting back to the property holder if the holder has lost contact with them. These laws instruct holders to turn forgotten funds over to a state official who will then make a diligent effort to find the owner. Most states hold lost funds until the owner is found, returning them to the owner at no cost or for a nominal handling fee upon filing a claim form and verification of identity.
